This is a stiff cocktail with roots deep in New Orleans. Some folks claim that the Sazerac is the oldest cocktail to be mixed in America, dating back to the pre-Civil War South.

INGREDIENTS

  • 50ml Rye Whisky
  • 1 sugar cube
  • Handful of ice
  • Angostura bitters
  • 15ml Absinthe (or Anise Liqueur)
  • Lemon twist garnish

METHOD

  • Add crushed ice and 15mL absinthe to a glass and set aside
  • In a second glass, add 1 sugar cube, 1 dash of bitters, and 2 dashes of bitters. Add 50mL of rye whiskey and crush together
  • Discard crushed ice and absinthe from prepared glass. Do not rinse the glass
  • Strain the cocktail into the absinthe-coated glass
  • Garnish with a lemon peel
